My overall experience has been a good and positive one. First, Shifu Chris and his wife Weiwei make an excellent training team. They work well together and separately in their instruction with students. Second, they are highly skilled at instruction, and the program design for instruction is structured, has intention, and has purpose. Third, they are very welcoming, and adept at knowing how to meet their individual students where they are to help them learn; knowing the balance between challenge and doable versus difficulty and frustration. Fourth, the class includes warm-up, Kung fu forms, weapons, sparring/grappling, conditioning, practice for mastery, meditation, mindfulness, and energy management and regulation.


The classes here check all the blocks, for my interest: smart programming, solid instruction, welcoming learning environment, humility, encouragement (from students and instructors), patience, and kindness; all the ingredients that support well being, growth, and mastery. It is well balanced and for myself, I find both anchoring and growth here.


Highly, highly recommend for those seeking an introduction to Kung Fu, seeking to continue this craft, to find instruction that is well done, and to explore all of the various elements and qualities of Kung Fu that are learned in the classroom and as accessible outside the classroom. "Review from a first-time student of the Fall 2023 course.


This 12-week course was one of the most rewarding practices I’ve participated in. While I’ve had experience in team sports, races, CrossFit, and HIIT classes, Shaolin Kung Fu stands apart for me because it was as much a mental challenge as a physical one - if not more so. For that reason, having a great teacher is key - especially because the techniques are more esoteric, while also varying greatly between schools and teachers. We were lucky, then, to have not one but *two* great teachers in Shifu Chris and Weiwei. They consistently created a class environment that was inviting, supportive, and respectful. Even in what constituted a full class (of beginners practicing alongside the more learned students), attention was always paid to the individual and their form. Whenever I may have perceived my progress to be behind that of others, the instructors would seem to intuit this and address the class generally to remind us to focus on ourselves and not measure our success to that of the others.


Shifu Chris and Weiwei were always easy to communicate with inside and outside of class, and very generous with their time. While they take what they do very seriously, they’re also not without a good sense of humor.

"This is a great place to create space for yourself and bring health to your mind, body and soul. I have come to take a break from my busy life and I was not sure what I will find. Shifu Chris and Weiwei gave me a warm welcome with all the students and there are trial classes you can take if you want to try it out first. There is no pressure to get anything perfect and they let you follow along at your own pace and with whatever issues you might have with your health you can adjust your workout. Shifu Chris is skillful and knowledgeable about traditional Kung Fu and I feel safe practicing Kung Fu which can be challenging for me with my health conditions. The practice is also diverse as it includes Shadow boxing and some defense techniques that can be good training for body stability and muscle memory. "Shifu Chris and his wife Wei Wei have become great mentors over the course of the 4 months or so. I've been attending their school. The school is adult focused which I enjoy. We train in traditional Shaolin martial arts which includes a wide range of stretching, exercise, forms, boxing, self-defense, breathing and meditation. I started out stiff as a board - I can now reach my toes. I feel I could defend myself in a fight through working with pads and drills. I've gained peace of mind through breathing and meditation. "I am so happy that I decided to do the 2 free trial classes a couple months ago! When you first walk into the Academy it radiates tranquility with the candles, incense and soft music in the background. Shifu Chris and his wife Weiwei, who helps with instructing students, are very friendly and patient teachers. I have a chronic medical condition that sometimes limits my physical abilities, but they are understanding and work with me at my level.

It is an excellent workout and is also very beneficial mentally. We do stretching, traditional Shaolin Kung Fu conditioning exercises and forms, Chinese boxing, self-defense techniques, Qi gong, meditation and sometimes Chinese language lessons.

Let me start by saying that if I could give more than 5 stars to a place, this would be it. Shifu Chris and his wife manage and instruct students in this family-owned dojo.


Shifu (master in Chinese) Chris is an excellent teacher. He has been doing martial arts for almost his own life, and he is very knowledgeable. He had spent 13 years in China working with different masters. As a result, he is an expert in different styles of martial arts such as Chinese boxing, Kung fu Shaolin. Following his mission to keep Shaolin kung fu alive in the US, he started this dojo in VA.


Currently, they offer two free sessions to let people experience the school before joining. I joined this class after participating in two free sessions. The environment and students in the dojo are great. Everybody is friendly and respects each other. From a covid standpoint, everybody wears a mask throughout the class, and there are sanitizers for both hands and equipment. Each session includes warmup, practicing the basics, form, partner work, and meditation at the end. Shifu Chris changes the structure of the class and always has new activities and challenges in each session.


After two months of going to this class, I already feel really accomplished. I am able to do basic techniques and self-defense. It had even effects on my day-to-day life and helps me to be more focused.

I cannot recommend this Shaolin Traditional Kung Fu studio enough. Shifu Chris is a fantastic and extremely knowledgeable teacher, having trained with masters for over 13 years in China. This is a true small family style studio, driven by passion rather than big business like other commercial dojos. I've been coming for almost a month so far, having had exactly zero background in martial arts but with a hunger to learn. I was immediately drawn in by the sense of belonging, being immediately accepted by the other students and the teacher despite taking it slow as a complete beginner. The classes are high energy and fun, full of cultural aspects to learn from ancient forms to modern boxing to Chinese vocabulary to Qi-Gong style breathing and meditation, which I find really fulfilling.


I would recommend this studio for anyone looking for a real authentic Shaolin Kung Fu practice, not just any other workout. Chris also offers two free classes to get your feet wet and try out the style for yourself.
